, austerity has been hurting obama's economy, for the last four years. government spending has gone down in ten of the last 12 quarters. under ronald reagan and george w. bush you will find this part of economic growth and spending is pretty much all growing under the two republicans. you can see it under the graph. under reagan, it added in his first term a bit more than 6/10th of a percentage point, under bush, about half a point. under obama, it has been negative. if obama is a socialist he is terrible at it. here is the interesting thing, if the economy is shrinking because the economy is shrink, we now added new jobs, almost 200,000 jobs in december. and we added more than 150,000 jobs in january. what is amazing about this, this period was fiscal cliff element, it was what everybody was saying the economy really needed was deficit reduction. and this is a period in which we didn't come to a big deficit reduction deal. what we did is raise taxes. it cut the deficit a bit, but not a big deal. what happened to the markets? somehow we kept adding jobs and the stock market did really we

was listening to president obama call for gun control, she had no way of knowing that in a matter of only a few hours, her family would become the latest in chicago to be ripped apart by a gunshot. her 18-year-old sister was shot and killed while walking with friends, one of whom may have been the intended target. cnn's ted rowlands has moran the story. he's joining us now. what are you finding out, ted? >> reporter: well, wolf, it is just another tragic story coming out of chicago. another teenager loses her life. as you mention, a 14-year-old girl who was up on stage with the president, listening to him talk about gun violence, would soon find out that her sister was also shot and killed. when president obama returned to chicago last week to talk about gun violence, 14-year-old destiny warren was one of the high school students standing behind him. a few hours later, destiny's 18-year-old sister was shot and killed in this alley in north chicago. >> all this gun violence that's going on out here, you never think it will be your child. this is the hardest thing for me in my life. >> reporter:

the debt. we have to pay the bill. the idea that the only way you got president obama and the democrats in congress to cut spending is to threaten them that is not true. that one piece of inside information is president obama really cares about the deficit. if there is something he noticed in the first two years when the economic crisis had to be front and center, the thing he wanted to deal with was the long-run deficit. the idea that he went on a spending binge if you don't make threats like that is crazy. the evidence is there that he put spending cuts on the table. he asked them for them to be paired with tax increases as well. there is more good will than people realize. more agreement that we have such a big budget problem that will we're going to fire on all cylinders. we have to cut spending. frankly, we have raise more revenue. >> you're listening to the california program and our speakers are economic experts. we are discussing national, regional, and global economic challenges. you can find video online. there's a series of questions around employment and job growth. what wha
